Why Hiring Smarter People Forces You to Be a Better Leader

Are Your Staff Raising the Bar? Why Hiring Smarter People Forces You to Be a Better Leader

One of the biggest mistakes I see builders make when growing their businesses? They hire people they can manage instead of people who can make the business better.

They bring on employees who follow orders, not ones who challenge the process. They hire for control instead of growth. And as a result? Their business stays stuck—because they’re still at the center of every decision.

The Truth About Hiring: Smart People Don’t Need to Be Told What to Do

Steve Jobs famously said, “It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do. We hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.”

And yet, so many builders do the exact opposite. They bring on employees and then refuse to step back. They micromanage, nitpick, and resist new ideas—because they’re afraid of losing control.

But the truth is, hiring better people doesn’t mean losing control. It means raising the bar.

Why You Should Hire People Who Are Better Than You

The best builders I know don’t just hire people to take things off their plate. They hire people who can do things better than they can.

A great project manager will spot inefficiencies in your builds that you’ve been blind to.
A strong operations lead will refine your systems, so your business runs smoother.
A sharp estimator will increase your profit margins in ways you never considered.

When you surround yourself with people who challenge you, your business evolves faster. You’re no longer the smartest person in the room—and that’s a good thing.

Hiring Smarter People Forces You to Be a Better Leader

Here’s what happens when you build a team that’s better than you in certain areas:

🔹 You stop micromanaging and start leading. When you have a team you trust, you can focus on strategy instead of daily problem-solving.

🔹 Your business stops depending on you for every little thing. If you have to be involved in every decision, you don’t have a business—you have a job.

🔹 You create a culture of innovation, not just execution. Smart employees don’t just do the work. They improve it. They innovate. They help you scale.

So Ask Yourself: Is Your Team Raising the Bar?

  • Are your employees pushing your business forward—or just waiting for directions?
  • Are you surrounding yourself with people who challenge you to grow as a leader?
  • Are you hiring to maintain the status quo, or to build something better?

Because at the end of the day, your business will only grow as much as you allow it to.

If you’re tired of feeling like the only one who truly owns the success of your business, it’s time to rethink who you’re bringing in. The best teams don’t need to be managed. They need to be led.

The One Thing You Can’t Build More Of

I snapped this photo last weekend as we headed back from the NE. We spent 7 days visiting with clients in PA, RI and CT. Passing back through NYC at sunrise…I managed to catch this photo from the car window at 80mph…

For most of that drive home I was dwelling on one thing: time.

Here’s a hard truth that took me decades to learn: Time is the one thing you can’t build more of. ⏳

You can always make more money, take on more projects, or hire more team members. But once time is gone, it’s gone for good.

That’s why time is your most valuable asset, in your business and your life.

If you’re spending hours micromanaging, putting out fires, or stuck on-site every day, you’re not just burning out—you’re losing the one resource that actually matters.

Imagine what could change if you reclaimed your time:

✅ More freedom to spend with family or take a real vacation.
✅ More growth by focusing on the tasks that actually move the needle.
✅ More balance to create a life you truly love.

It’s not about doing more—it’s about working smarter. Protect your time. Invest it wisely. And watch everything else fall into place.

It’s counterintuitive in our hustle and grind culture…I get it.

If you’re ready to get your time back and start building a business that works for you, let’s chat.

Your time is too valuable to waste—let’s make every second count.

Always in your corner,

Rodric

The Secret to Get Anyone to Do Anything

The Secret to Getting Anyone to Do Anything You Want

Imagine being able to hand off a task and know it will get done right—without micromanaging, double-checking, or fixing mistakes. For builders, this can feel like a dream. But the truth is, when you know how to communicate exactly what you need, you can get anyone to do anything… (steps 3 and 4 are the most often missed and cause the most problems).

Are You Really Giving Your Team What They Need to Succeed?

In the construction world, time is money. If you’re constantly redoing work or fixing mistakes, chances are something got lost in communication. Many builders assume their team or even subs “just know” how to get the job done, but without clear guidance, things can quickly go off track.

Does this sound familiar?

Picture this: you’re on a tight deadline and hand off an important task to a team member, assuming they’ll handle it just fine. A few days later, you check in and discover it’s either incomplete or not at all what you expected.

Frustrating, right?

Unfortunately, this situation is all too common for builders who don’t take a few extra steps when delegating tasks.

Delegation isn’t just about passing along work. It’s about setting up your team to succeed by explaining the “what,” “why,” and “how” of each task. When done right, good delegation can save you time, avoid costly mistakes, and keep projects running smoothly.

So I created the 7-Step Process for Effective Task Delegation. It’s designed to make sure your team has everything they need to complete tasks the right way the first time. With just a few simple tweaks, you can turn over jobs confidently, knowing they’ll get done correctly.

You have to heal before you hustle…

One day it hit me…

I remember a time when my days were spent in constant motion, running from one site to the next, fielding client calls, and micromanaging every project detail.

As a custom home builder, I thought that was just part of the job. But I was exhausted, and despite my hard work, I never seemed to have enough time for the things that really mattered.

That’s when I came across a quote from Steve Jobs: ‘It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do; we hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.’ 💭

It made me take a hot minute there in my truck…stuck in traffic… heading to another site… and just think.

I realized that while I could always earn more money or take on new contracts, the one thing I could never get back was time.

Every minute spent buried in the day-to-day grind was gone forever—time I could have spent with my family, growing my business strategically, or simply living.

I knew something had to change. My time is my most valuable asset, and I had to protect it as fiercely as I would my profits.

What would it feel like to reclaim just 14 hours a week? To lead your business rather than getting trapped in the weeds of running it? It’s not a dream—it’s possible with the right systems, delegation, and strategic planning.

So, how much more time are you willing to sacrifice before making a change?

If you’re ready to invest your time in building a business that supports your life instead of draining it, I’d love to help. Let’s set up a call to pinpoint where your time is slipping and how you can reclaim it.

Just hit reply and say “TIME,” and I’ll personally reach out to schedule a chat.

Don’t let another week slip through your fingers.

Always in your corner,

Rodric

The Shocking Reason You’re Constantly Out of Time (It’s not what you think…)

Want to know the real reason you’re constantly out of time {{contact.first_name}}?

It’s not because you’re taking on too many clients or managing too many projects—it’s because you’re still doing everything yourself.

I see it all the time with custom home builders:

You’re juggling client calls, running between job sites, managing the crew, and making sure that every tiny detail is perfect.

But here’s the hard truth—if you want to grow and reclaim your time, you can’t keep trying to do it all.

The only way to break free is through strategic hiring.

Not just bringing in anyone, but building a team of key people who can handle the tasks that drain your energy.

The right hires don’t just “fill gaps”—they allow you to step out of the daily grind and focus on what only you can do: high-level strategy, business growth, and leading your company.

Think about it like this:

When you hire smart, you’re not just adding people—you’re buying back your time.

Imagine what you could do if you had 14 hours a week back—time you could use to take on new opportunities, develop your vision, or even take a real vacation without worrying about things falling apart.

But as long as you’re stuck doing it all, you’ll never get there.

So here’s my question: Are you ready to stop being a one-man show?

Talk soon,

Rodric

P.S.

Don’t let another year slip by stuck in the grind. Take control now. Living the same year 75 times isn’t a life…

Why you’ll always be stuck in the day to day…

“If you don’t have a clear vision for your business, you’ll always be stuck in the day-to-day grind.”

Let’s face it —you didn’t start your business to work 60+ hours a week, constantly put out fires, and have zero time for yourself or your family.

But without a clear vision for where your business is headed, that’s exactly where you’ll end up—stuck in the grind with no end in sight.

Think about it—how can you build a thriving, scalable business if you don’t even know what the finished product looks like?

Think of your business like building a new home.

You’re incredible at laying out plans and executing on behalf of your clients, but when it comes to your own business, do you have a blueprint?

Without a clear vision, here’s what happens:

  1. You spend your time reacting to problems instead of building the business you want.
  2. You’re so caught up in managing every detail that you never step back to focus on growth.
  3. The team you’ve built depends on you for every decision because you haven’t set up the systems that allow them to run things independently.
  4. Your business starts to feel like it’s running you.

And the worst part?

You’re losing time—time you could be spending with your family, on your next big project, or taking a well-deserved break.

If you’re constantly reacting to every little thing, you’ll never be able to step away and enjoy the freedom you’ve worked so hard for.

Here’s the reality:

A business without a clear plan, a vision for what success looks like, and systems to support that vision, will alwaystake more time than it should.

You’ll always be stuck, working in the business, instead of on it.

But imagine this—you have a crystal-clear vision of exactly where you want to take your business:

  1. You’d know what tasks to delegate, what systems to put in place, and how to free up hours every week.
  2. You’d stop reacting to every little issue and start proactively building the business you’ve always dreamed of.
  3. And most importantly, you’d reclaim your time—time you can invest in growing your business, spending with your family, or finally taking that vacation you’ve been putting off.

So, let me ask you: Do you have a clear vision for your business?

If not, it’s time to create one. The clearer your vision, the more time you’ll gain back.

And here’s where I can help. In just a single 20-minute Builder’s Blueprint Call, we’ll dive into your business, pinpoint what’s keeping you stuck in the grind, and create a custom roadmap that shows you how to reclaim your time. You’ll leave with actionable steps to put your business on autopilot—so you can finally start working on it, instead of in it.

Knowing You’re The Best – The Most Important Sales Skill of All

In a world where humility often teeters on the edge of self-doubt, there lies a vital truth for every entrepreneur and business leader—a truth which, if embraced, can fundamentally alter our perceptions of sales and service.

That truth?

Believing you are truly the best at what you do is not just advantageous; it is essential. Here’s why.

Confidence as a Foundation for Service

The journey of mastery in any field doesn’t conclude with the acquisition of skills or accolades. It culminates in an unwavering belief in your ability to make a significant impact. This conviction—your inherent capability to help others—not only propels you forward but also dismantles any sales resistance in your path.

Sales resistance often arises from a series of complex, limiting beliefs. Many of us recoil at the notion of ‘selling,’ conjuring images of insistent storefronts, grimy used car guys or cold calls at dinner time. However, herein lies the shift: selling, at its core, is not about the transaction; it’s about offering a solution, a service capable of improving or even transforming lives.

The Necessity of Knowing You Are the Best

Believing in your unrivaled ability to serve your clients changes everything. It transforms the act of making an offer from a menial task into a moral imperative. If you possess the knowledge, skills, or products that could solve problems, enhance quality of life, or accelerate success, withholding them due to your personal hang-ups around sales is not an act of humility—it’s a disservice.

Imagine you have the cure to a common, pressing problem. Would you hesitate to offer it out of fear of ‘selling’?

Likely not…

You would feel compelled to share it, even shout it from the rooftops if necessary. This mindset shift is what makes the difference between where you are – and where you want to be.

Your service, your skills, your product—they are the ‘cure’ your audience needs. Believing you are the best is not arrogance; it’s an acknowledgment of the value you bring to the table.

Transforming Sales Resistance into an Act of Service

Genuinely believing in your capacity to help and being the best at what you do transforms any sales resistance into an act of service. Viewing your offers through the lens of service—to improve, enhance, solve, or uplift those around you—transcends the traditional sales call. You’re not selling; you’re serving. You’re not pushing a product; you’re providing a pathway to a solution.

This conviction in your craft and service shifts the focus from yourself—your fears of appearing ‘salesy,’ your limiting beliefs about money and sales—to the individuals you aim to serve. It becomes less about whether you can make the sale, and more about whether you can afford not to extend your help.

Putting It All To Work

Believing that you are the best at your craft is not optional; it is everything. This very belief serves as the antidote to sales resistance, transforming it into an act of service. It’s a commitment to ensure that your own limiting beliefs do not obstruct others from accessing the solutions they need – your solutions.

So.. now that we know better… who can we serve today?

Always in your corner,

Rodric

People ask… “How do you do it?”…

In the last 15 years, I’ve built 5 different companies, some well into 7 and 8-figure territory.

But I’ve also visited some 60 countries on six continents purely for fun: the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Daytona 500, the F1 Grand Prix at Monza…. the list goes on.

People ask, “How do you do it?”

I’ll answer, “Well, I book the flight and the hotel and I get on the flight and check into the hotel,” only said partially tongue in cheek.

I don’t share any of this to impress you… only to impress upon you that it’s possible.

The ability to travel freely around the globe has been a top priority for me for as long as I can remember, and as such, I have built companies, teams, and a personal schedule around that priority… so it allows me to do just that.

Your priorities may be vastly different… and that’s ok.

But if someome took a look at your life from the outside in… would they be able to tell what your priorities really are?

We always get what we prioritize. The problem is what we say and what we plan for and do often look very, very, very different.

Think back on a time in your life when you had an audacious goal. Perhaps you wanted to get back to your high school weight, or you had a business idea that you just HAD to see through to completion.

Who did you have to become to achieve that goal?

What did you have to give up?

Why was it worth it?

We always get what we truly want and deserve in this life. If you want to be fit, but you eat garbage and watch Netflix for four hours a night, telling your friends (and yourself) that you “just don’t have the time,”… you are getting the body and health you deserve.

The same goes for your business and the life you CHOOSE to design.

LISTEN to the whispers inside of you.

Having the courage to live the life you want is about embracing authenticity and defying others’ expectations. It means stepping confidently into your truth, even when it diverges from societal norms or the paths laid out by others.

It’s about listening to the whispers of your soul, even when they lead you down unconventional roads.

(“Listen to the whispers before they become screams”, as my friend Darryll Stinson would say.)

Courage is the willingness to take risks and pursue the life YOU want with reckless abandon. To stand tall in the face of doubt or criticism… especially from those closest to you.

It’s about recognizing that your life is yours to shape according to your vision, not others.

When you have the courage to live authentically, you empower yourself to create a life filled with purpose, fulfillment, and joy, and by living that life—your life—you inspire others to do the same.

What a gift.

Rodric

Why we STILL hire teachers, coaches and consultants when everything is free online.

I JUST KEPT FAILING…

A few months ago the radiator tab (a piece of aluminum that holds the radiator onto the car to keep it from blowing off into the car behind me) broke on my beloved 32 Deuce Coupe that’s in the photo.

I can weld pretty well, but have never welded aluminum. It’s a completely different process with different tools and gases to make it all work.

Day after day I practiced before taking a 5000 degree torch to my car… and every day I failed.

I watched HOURS of YouTube Videos. Nada. No dice. Fail. Fail. Fail. Fail.

Then I called Russ, a old hot rodder from my Michigan days who’s since moved to Florida.

“Russ”, I said, “For the life of me I can’t get this to work. I’ve tried everything”.

“Where did you get your practice metal?”, he replied.

“Home Depot”, I said.

“That’s your problem”, he quickly bounced back.

A LOSING BATTLE

You see, what I didn’t realize was that the Depot aluminum was cheap. And cheap meant impurities. And no matter how skilled you are, you’ll NEVER be able to weld two piece of crap metal together… it’s just not in the cards.

While I may have stumbled across this fact, realized it, and tried again with better quality. It may have taken me AGES of frustration and trial and error.

Russ knew what to ask in 60 seconds. Because he’s “been there, done that.”.

In today’s digital era, access to information is just a click away. From calculus to welding, much can be learned through Google and YouTube. However, the demand for teachers, coaches, and consultants remains strong. This illustrates their irreplaceable value—something algorithms can’t replicate.

The Human Element: Aggregation, Speed, and Convenience

Aggregation: The vast amount of information online can be overwhelming. Teachers, coaches, and consultants curate the most relevant, accurate, and up-to-date resources, saving us from the paralysis of analysis involved in self-education.

Speed: Learning online can be time-consuming. Educators expedite this process with their expertise, guiding learners efficiently, and avoiding trial and error. This faster learning is essential in our fast-paced world.

Convenience: Personal educators offer tailored learning experiences that generic online content can’t match. They adapt in real-time to address specific challenges and learning styles, ensuring comprehensive understanding and practical application.

They ask what metal you’re using when you don’t even know to think about that yet…

THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING

Studies consistently show that human-guided learning leads to better outcomes. Personalized tutoring significantly outperforms self-study, and professionals with coaches report higher success, satisfaction, and career growth.

It’s why I have a coach.

It’s why I AM a coach.

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

While free information is abundant, investing in teachers, coaches, and consultants is invaluable. The benefits of curated content, guided learning, and tailored instruction are unmatched. We hire these professionals not just for their knowledge, but for their guidance and connection. The journey to mastery involves transforming knowledge into wisdom, and for that, dedicated educators and mentors are, and may just always be, irreplaceable.

Always in your corner,

Rodric
